I really liked this book. I was definitely rooting for Queenie, at the same time horrified at how things were going. It's overall really dark in terms of themes but I feel like they all serve the purpose.

I liked this book, it's incredibly raw, relatable and thought provoking. At times it was cringy or hard to get through because the FMC is flawed and real, she makes mistakes and says or does the wrong thing. I found myself either wanting to shake her or hug her.

The conclusion to this book was a nice wrap up and conclusion to the growth that Queenie underwent. I hated a lot of this book, the choices Queenie made, the abuse she endured, but I felt compelled to see how it ended. I think the writing was good, it elicited a strong emotional response from me.

the good:
-queenie's jamaican british family, their dialogue/slang, and the way they care for each other
-queenie's friend group, the corgis... nothing like a good group of friends :)
-queenie's determination to improve her mental health and seek the therapy she needs

the bad:
-graphic abuse & sexual content - queenie put herself into bad situations and men put her into bad situations. that could have been shown without such graphic content/descriptions. i had to skim some large portions of this book. :(
-some of the workplace things queenie deals with could have been avoided if she just, ya know, worked. alas....

i probably would not have finished this book if it had not been a book club selection. the author is a talented writer and i'd consider reading another of her books in the future!

So many of Queenie’s experiences were so brutal I really question the judgment of everyone who compared this novel to Bridget Jones because there is truly nothing similar in tone. I will say that while some situations felt forced, and I didn’t believe Queenie’s relationship with Tom at all, the dialogue all felt very real, which is so difficult to do. Seeing her growing relationship with her grandfather was nice, and I wish we could have seen more of that.

I would also fully recommend checking the content warnings for this book if that’s something you need.

Since I knew that the TV show was coming out, I knew I had to give it a go!

Candice Carty-Williams writes an incredibly flawed, human person and Queenie does all the things I think people easily do when they are unwell (mentally, physically etc.) 🥲 The ‘strong black woman’ idea was very strongly placed in the story as well, although we learned to navigate it when Janet came around.
I loved Janet and that moment where her and Queenie discuss what it means to be a black woman in the UK…

I loved Darcy and Kyazike throughout the story.
I’m still frustrated that Cassandra was allowed to come back, even without her Guy, but friendships come and go 🤷🏻‍♀️

I am giving it a 3.5 out of 5 stars as although many issues were covered, some of them did not go into depth and some of the time, I felt the book went a bit flat. In saying all this though, I LOVE Queenie’s ending and was happy to see her enjoying her family and friends’ company 🥰

Enjoy ✨ Thank you!
