I absolutely have a thing for middle grade baking books with family issues (it's a surprisingly robust niche) & Summer of a Thousand Pies delivers on both the baking & the heartfelt moments. I was a little surprised at how heavy the family parts are (homelessness, mental illness, food insecurity, bullying, self worth, immigration, etc.) but it's so good to see well handled topics in books for younger readers. I cried, of course, for Cady & the unfairness of it all but don't let that stop you. This book is a warm apple pie of a hug with all the feels included. Heartbreaking & mending all in one with strong characters & a charming setting. Highly recommended for all the foodie MG feels!

this was my favorite book Iā€™ve read this year; a little girl with a rough home life gets sent to live w her aunt and her wife and learns about love and life and herself and feeling safe by learning how to bake guided by the great british baking show it made me laugh it made me cry Iā€™m going to get a physical copy so that everyone I know can read it

This was a super charming and really good read, despite being rather cheesy. I really do wish we see more of Suzanne and Shell, ah well. Also wished Cady was more overwhelmed over, well, everything. That's all the negative things I can say tho, it's just a super cute, charming, and warm read.

I really wanted to like this, and on the surface, I did, but I just couldn't make it through. After two months of it kicking around my house, it's time to give up and return it to the library.

I enjoyed this book a lot. It reminds me of All You Knead Is Love by Tanya Guerrero. There was a cat and two dogs, some well written and understandable characters, and, of course, a lot of baking. That is all the makings of a good book for me! It was also a little bit sad sometimes, but not depressing and it felt sweet. It was perfectly the kind of book that I was in the mood to read. I would definitely recommend this! I also enjoyed the importance of The Great British Bake Off as it is a show that I love to watch as well.
