I'll be honest: I nearly put down The Mage Team. Slate just really isn't a likable character in the first, oh, dozen or so chapters. Once the action really got started, the pace of the plot picked up and The Mage Team became a much more interesting. The plot twist regarding the identity of the traitor and the fact that Slate does do some growing up over the course of the book made The Mage Team and enjoyable read overall.
