I learned a lot about Kenyan history and politics! Maathai was clearly a phenomenal woman and leader. Some sections of the book felt a little too detailed, while others lacked color. I also felt that Maathai wasn’t critical enough of the Christian missionaries and their educational system for how they undermine and sought to eliminate native culture and language.

No doubt Wangari Maathai has lived an amazing life thus far. This book goes over the struggles and the accomplishments that she has had throughout the years. Winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, her struggle to carry out the Green Belt Movement is filled with optimism and strength despite the odds she faced. An uplifting book that will make all its readers desire to make changes to the very complicated world that we live within.
