This was such an interesting read, mostly because I now suspect John Banville read it, and that it influenced his novel The Untouchable, one of my favorite books. This autobiography's got it all: humor, history, anecdotes (for example MacNeice was friends with Anthony Blunt and W.H. Auden), poetry, and a tone that was so enjoyable I put away all my preconceived notions about autobiographies (that they're pompous, overlong, etc.) and just sat back and relaxed.
