I enjoyed this book--cool concept, certainly--but it ultimately felt a bit flat to me. Lacking in dimension, like reading a screenplay. I wanted something... A bit more immersive from it, I guess, both in terms of worldbuilding and characterization. But it was fun and I'll probably read the sequels.

I love it when I judge a book by its cover and it turns out to be awesome. This is my first book by V.E. Schwab but now most of her stuff is in my to-read shelf. It didn't even feel like 400 pages, I just flew through this book. The world building/magic system is unique and spelled out without being overbearing. The characters are flushed out and only a little predictable, but in a likable way. I tend to be slightly harder on fantasy books then the other fiction I read, but Im buying the others in this series as soon as I can.
