I honestly didn't know what to rate this one. I can't even tell if I liked it or not. I can say for sure--100% certainty--without a doubt--I will never reread this book. It was so much. So much. It was dark and insane. I blew through it in 3 days, and I'm a slow reader so I felt that qualified it for more than just 3 stars. It kept my attention. I was turning those pages wanting to know what happens next. Wanting to know how the hell they were gonna get out of this mess. The twisted thing is, we get the antagonist's POV too and it was WILD. He's legitimately a criminal genius, but he uses it to obsess over a woman. Like, I get it. Based on his past, it makes perfect sense for his character, but I kept sitting there in awe of his forethought and attention to detail. It was unbelievably uncomfortable to get his POV a lot of the time, but some of it was genuinely what made the book so much better.
The relationship between Sloan and Carter was so sweet. I loved them. Asa was a train wreck who I was hoping would die from the beginning and by the end I was like, seriously guys, the only way you're getting out of this is if he's 6 feet under ground because he's an actual genius and obsessed with this woman.
It was also really fascinating because Sloan is trapped in this life with Asa, but she's so smart. She keeps her cool, she tells him convincingly what he wants to hear to keep herself safe. I respect what she does for her brother. It genuinely felt like she was trapped with no way out, and she was handling it like a pro, the only way she could.
It's terrifying to know how truly grounded in reality this is, though. People like Asa exist in the world. People worse than him exist. It made me quite a bit more tense reading.

I feel like it just fell short in spots she could have elaborated on

i felt interested in this story, i don't expect to re-read this or recommend to anyone. so much content warning, some of it unwarranted. sloan was a character i loved
i hated asa with my entire being (which i guess was the point)
. the story wasn't super predictable which i liked. the ending gave me all the answers i was looking for and it didn't make me cry. over all, my least fav hoover book. possibly my least fav book of the year so far.

I’d definitely check out the trigger warnings either online or the beginning of the book before reading: I’m  privileged that I haven’t been through or experienced what the characters of this book have went through to which I proceeded to read this book.

But wow. This book was very intense, all I wanted to do was to read this book all day, everyday but had to stop because of work and other stuff. I think this is my top all time favorite book written by Colleen now as Verity was the previous one.
