There is no better thriller writer than Tana French. That is not hyperbole. She's the gold standard. The Trespasser is the sixth book in her Dublin Murder Squad series, but the good news is they each work just fine as a standalone. In this outing, Detective Antoinette Conway is investigating what looks like an open-and-shut domestic case along with her trusty partner Stephen Moran, but from the very beginning, odd details arise that keep the two greenhorn detectives from perfunctorily filing it away. Conway has a major chip on her shoulder as the only minority woman on the squad, and it might keep her from seeing things as they really are. Smoothly written, perfectly paced, expertly plotted—every Tana French mystery is a five star read for me. I'm seriously considering getting all five previous books from the library and holing up with them over Thanksgiving weekend.

Took a loooooong time for me to get into this one, but once I did it went quickly! Every time I start to doubt Tana French, she proves me wrong.

Update (Mar 2020): I just completed a full re-read of the Dublin Murder series, and have upgraded all of my ratings - including that of the much misunderstood Book #5, to which I owe an apology - to five stars a pop. I’m stingy with my stars as a rule, but these books are perfection and deserve every last one of them.

Original Review (Oct 2016): THANK YOU, TANA FRENCH. Following two consecutive disappointments from favorite authors - (looking at you, Atwood) - I was a bit wary of cracking into this one. See, I love me some murder squad, but my little heart? Just couldn't handle another literary let-down.
Happy to report that this is a worthy installment of the series (and superior to its predecessor, the controversial Book #5). All is right in the world - whew.

Meh
Even though the book starts off with the crime, it took me FOREVER to get into it. Once i was able to, it wasn’t bad.

3.5! I really really liked this! Not my fav of hers but I loved the slow build and it was very entertaining! I did want a little bit more of a bigger ending though! I felt like the last 50 pages dragged.

Tana French is at her best writing about driven detectives and strong minded women. One of her better books in this series.
