This was really fun and sweet! I've not read Sophie Labelle's prose novels before - I purchased the first Ciel book for my library but haven't gotten around to reading it - but I've read a ton of her comics, and it was a delight to get this different perspective. Labelle's comics lean more into Stephie's perspective, and it was interesting to see Ciel's anxieties and shyness. I think Ciel seems super confident in the comics, but we always see them with Stephie - their most trusted friend - and there is a whole wonderful series about their youtube show, that is so funny and fun, and so of course we're seeing them in a place where they feel bold and confident. (I think the zine collection those is called Trans Lucid and I highly recommend buying it if you can, it's my absolute favorite.)

My favorite thing about this book is that not a lot happens in it, in the context of middle grade and YA - it's kind of just some young teens being themselves and having a good time! Ciel has a crush, builds their skills for their youtube channel, helps their little brother develop a drag persona and runs in a school election. That's kind of it, and it's great! There were all these little points where I was like, oh god, what if this goes wrong, is this where Ciel gets bullied? Is this where the bad stuff happens? That I have these anxieties as a queer reader is real telling - stories like this are so rare. It's lovely to have them.
