beautifully written meandering book with not much central narrative thrust but a lot of lovely observation and memory as filtered through a guy who’s kind of a jag. there’s a moment where the narrator and others are talking about how americans as a culture are now unaccustomed to dealing with death on a massive scale, say due to pandemics, compared to the 19th century. thought that was funny to read.
