I'm not an expert on Montaigne, but his essays have personality. It's an art that he puts enough of himself in his writings without pointing fingers at himself, while he rambles on about all kinds of topics.

An early masterpiece of deliberately un-systematic, individually focussed philosophy; fans of Nietzsche or Kierkegaard will find much to enjoy in this.

I loved in particular how Montaigne set himself as the object of his assays and eschewed grand metaphysics for grounded analysis of the human condition as he saw it in himself. Perhaps as a result of this focus, this is a surprisingly readable book, any chapter of which offers real fruits for thought on the practical challenges of living. If you are interested in a book that will stimulate you to think about yourself, I cannot recommend this enough.

This was a great book.

I recently discovered blog post featuring a set of books that was recommended by one of my all-time favorite authors, [a:Ryan Holiday|5775580|Ryan Holiday|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1340390663p2/5775580.jpg].

This book was one of the many recommended (and one of the few I haven't yet read), so I had to pick it up!

I found this a good set of essays, but a great set of philosophy.

Would recommend this to others interested in the golden set of philosophy.
