Carmen Maria Machado’s editorial work makes this edition what it is for me. This was so camp and silly at times, and just the right amount of spooky/mysterious to ease into Halloween time 🩸

Advertised as a book that inspired vampire media for decades to follow and as a reader you can see how. The sapphic undertones, haunting and suspenseful overtones echo throughout the text and contribute to the disturbing atmosphere and characterization of Carmilla and the men surrounding Laura.
