(Disclaimer: I received this book from the publisher. This has not impacted my review which is unbiased and honest.)

I was absolutely taken by storm by Belladonna and had the highest hopes for Foxglove and they were absolutely met. I loved where this sequel went not only did it give me more to swoon for, but I actually gasped. This entire series has stolen my heart. It's swoony, has a tinge to the darkness, and is full of mystery. To sink back into the world of Belladonna has been so satisfying. The audiobook narration was sweeping and graceful, Kristin Atherton did a phenomenal job at infusing each sentence with promise, tension, and romance.

”When everything went to hell, at least she could always count on scones.” From the very beginning I loved the narrator (I listened to the audiobook). She does the voices very well and is very engaging. Just want to put that out there. Foxglove picks up after the events of Belladonna — our mc, Signa, faces another murder that she must solve. This time of a duke, and Elijah Hawthorne, the father of Blythe — who is alive thanks to Signa’s actions in the first book to exchange her life with Percy’s, Blythe’s brother and the murderer in that book — is blamed for it. So they are trying to prove his innocence. It was actually nice to have a death right off the bat because it means that Signa can be reunited with death briefly — that’s only when they can really see each other. But now there’s a new player getting in the way: Fate, Death’s brother. And he wants Signa for himself as a sort of revenge against Death for taking his beloved so many years ago. Fate tells Signa that he thinks she’s not a Reaper but a reincarnation of his love, Life, who could, obviously, create life. When Signa accidentally starts to create life herself she realizes maybe what Fate is saying is true — but that could jeopardize her relationship with death, so she doesn’t want to believe it. We find out in the end that the person who killed the Duke — on accident — was Eliza Wakefield, the niece of the dead Duke. She had gotten pregnant with Percy as the father — which is even sadder for her because we know Percy isn’t returning — and her uncle was trying to set her up with a really old guy and she couldn’t bear it. So she laced a drink with some of the poison — she had only intended a little bit for the suitor so that he would get sick and no longer be thought of as an option — but of course the outcome was that the Duke was killed. But Blythe and Signa don’t want to throw her under the bus because both of them can’t blame Eliza for trying to get out of a bad situation. So Blythe’s father is still at risk of being blamed and executed for the murder. Fate tells them he’ll save them if Signa agrees to be his wife, and Signa decides to do it because she owes the Hawthornes so much and because Blythe asks her to. Blythe finds out finally in this book that Signa is the one who killed Percy but that she did it because Percy had tried to kill her. Blythe realizes she shouldn’t be angry with Signa and so as Signa is agreeing to marry fate she intervenes and uses her own blood in the ritual to become Fate’s wife. Fate is so angry but he can’t hurt her because Signa had entered a bargain to protect Blythe. Also, I feel like there’s obviously some sexual tension between Blythe and Fate in some way, even though Fate is trying to get with Signa because he believes her to be Life. There’s a scene that I can’t get out of my head where Blythe is trying to see if Eliza is being poisoned by tasting her tea because she was poisoned and she’d recognize the taste but she can’t bring herself to do it so Fate takes a sip and then kisses her haha it sounds so dumb when I write it like that but in the book it was pretty fire. I wonder in the next book if we’ll see them start to fall for each other. Especially because at the end we find out that it’s Blythe who is Life’s reincarnation, not Signa. I totally called this. Blythe was always with Signa when the Life powers were used, but I honestly guessed it because of the aforementioned sexual tension between Blythe and Fate that made me realize that she was indeed the common thread. I can’t wait for the next book because I can’t wait for Fate to realize this. And also for Blythe to realize it, too, because Signa doesn’t tell Blythe right away. Death suggests they discover that for themselves now that they are married. Overall I had such a fun time with this book, especially the bits between Signa and Death. The author does such a good job of building the tension both when they are apart and together. I loved the introduction of Fate and his story as well. Looking forward to the next book!<spoilers>
