The writing style just wasn't my thing but besides that the story is ok. I was personally just hoping the book is over soon every time i started to read, but at the same time i wanted to know what was going to happen and how the book will end. IT WAS A STRUGGLE!!!

A YA novel about Oslo during nazi occupation.
Ilse has a crush on her neighbour and finally he asks her out; he stands her up and things start to unravel.
Feels a little disjointed, little bits of multiple peoples stories without any real preamble or satisfactory conclusion. Even for ya readers this feels overly simplistic though did win awards .

This book is interminably slow with characters that are flat and lifeless. WWII historical fiction is a favorite genre of mine but this book was not for me.

Stillferdig roman om skjebnen til en norsk, jødisk familie under andre verdenskrig. Forfatteren tar et godt grep når hun lar leseren bli godt kjent med søstrene Stern og foreldrene deres. Alminnelige jenter med alminnelige problemer og drømmer. Alt forandres den dramatiske seinhøsten 1942. Tenåringen Ilse er ved et rent lykketreff ikke hjemme den kvelden norsk politi kommer for å hente henne og resten av familien, hun har stormet ut etter en krangel med moren. Hun får hjelp til å komme i skjul, men familien hennes går døden i møte. Vi følger dem på Donau og videre til Auschwitz og like inn i gasskammeret. Uansett hvor mange bøker jeg leser om Holocaust, så blir jeg like rystet hver gang, over at dette faktisk skjedde. Denne avdempede fortellingen er vond og nødvendig lesing.

Lovely story. I didn't realize it was more of a YA novel when I started it, but that didn't really affect my opinion of it. It was good... sad, but good.

What a gut punch. The story in this is gut-wrenching, heartbreaking, and feels so current despite the WW2 setting. I didn't know much about what Jewish people endured in Norway during WW2. This book shares multiple perspectives: a Jewish family, a teen involved with smuggling Jews into Sweden, a taxi driver who helps the Germans arrest Jewish women and children. The translation wasn't great, but the story was compelling despite that.

Words cannot express how much I despise Hermann Rod. The overall writing style is ok but my one star is because of how much I can't stand him. Hermann questions himself and asks 'Am I being a selfish coward?' Yes, Hermann. Yes, you are, you are the worst.
