I pushed through the end of the second book because it all got way too predictable and I was hoping the third book would vamp back up to the way the first book was written. A few chapters in it became glaringly obvious that it wasn’t. The main character had absolutely no personal growth in the second book and the third just started in the same frustrating manner. If I had started this series when I was younger I probably would have enjoyed it and actually finished the series. As is, I didn’t want to feel like I had wasted anymore time on a story that was far too predictable with such little growth.

As I write this I'm 2 chapters away from finishing. Even though it takes me months to get through them these books never feel like a chore. The moment I open it I'm transporter into the world. Hobb's writing is wonderful. I can't wait to get to the 3rd book, unfortunately I'll have it in a month :(

Despite the book feeling fairly slow, I devoured it. I care so deeply about all the characters and I love the way Hobb writes. The way women are written is always so good - they have agency and personalities and power without ignoring sexism. It feels realistic. Fitz is such a well written character. I understand why he does everything he does but he is still flawed and makes a lot of mistakes (especially with Molly) but it isn't frustrating to read. I cannot wait to read the third book.
