TW for the novel (not my review): Sexual assault & Murder
This book kept me on the edge of my seat. What a suspenseful novel with many real-world implications. The plot, character development, and writing were great. I especially liked Ellice's character arc. Morris painted Ellice as a complex character whose seemingly immoral decisions mad sense within the context of her life. The plot also felt terrifyingly plausible.

Enjoyable legal thriller. A bit by the numbers but I appreciated the ways in which class and race shaped the story. Kinda felt like the movie Fried Green Tomatoes mixed with a 90s John Grisham novel. I liked the main character and that she didn't apologize for her choices even though she knew others would find them unethical.

This book was interesting and entertaining, but had some holes. I have been dragging my feet to read this book because I don’t usually like legal thrillers/mysteries. This story was refreshingly free of the legalese! But the story was a bit too slow to unfold. After the dramatic start, it stalled while doing basic set-up. Elise made some decisions that were in opposition to her best interests and her personal beliefs, and I found that hard to get behind. I wasn’t a fan of the ending; Elise’s actions bothered me. And Morris laid out her thesis statement as the final paragraph, which felt unnecessary and heavy-handed given the themes of the book.
Graphic: Abortion
Minor: Child abuse and Gun violence

Unfortunately this one didn’t do it for me. I felt a disconnect from the beginning with the authors writing style.
I am looking for a thriller and not an individuals thoughts on how racism. I could care less if authors thought purple people were killers, but don’t mention it to the world.
Keep hate, racism, judgment, stereotypes, politics out of fiction books! We are in 2022! Live in the here and now! I could go on and on about all the injustices of this world that needs a hell of a lot more notoriety than race. We have so many more marginalized people who DO NOT HAVE A VOICE TODAY!

A good premise but not so great with execution. It gets very repetitive and every little detail is spelled out for the reader. Ellice is so smart and yet she seems to have very little common sense. I would try another book by this author but hopefully the next novel has a better editor.
