okay, first off, the writing was incredible and the plot was great, but it was a bit questionable.

like, when the author went on for 200 pages about the academy and rin's life there and then 30 pages later a new set of characters is introduced with little to no knowledge about them?? and also, in terms of East Asian history, i've heard mixed opinions.
like, the depiction of the speerlys (or taiwanese people) being considered evil and inhuman, and the author even reinforcing these stereotypes with the main character
Spoiler when it's revealed that she's a speerly?
like what?
and the rape of Nanjing being used as a gotcha! moment to further enhance the plot, and in the end when rin SUFFOCATES the people of mugen (japan) in the name of revenge for the genocide of Speer??

anyways, if this book wasn't based on the sino-japanese wars and was purely fictional, or was just chinese inspired, it could've been something great. i don't understand claiming the book as "more than fantasy" bc it references modern chinese history when you've changed the names of the nations, added a fanciful element that contradicts the history, and have watered down a few historical events.

For me, this book was very much a "don't judge a book from the front cover" moment for me. I had put off picking it up at bookstores because the cover never appealed to me, but I so wish I had given this book a chance earlier. I love the concepts of the book, I love the world building and the depth of the characters, and I love how it goes deep into understanding the theological background of the world and psychology of the characters. Though I found some parts of the book predictable, I still found myself fully immersed in the story-telling from the strong female protagonist's viewpoint (even if she did frustrate me also at some points).

this book is fucked up but it was also beautiful.
Spoiler my favorite thing about this book was when Atlan and Rin finally started to understand each other. the reader got the sense that they finally know each other and that rin understands the person that Atlan is but it also makes it so the reader still doesn't know much about Atlan and that fact is really cool to me. the bloody and detailed massacres weren't great and made me a little uncomfortable but after that, the book always gets better. I BOTH LOVE AND HATE HOW ATLAN DIED! sacrificing himself for the greater good or whatever was great and I can't be mad at him but the fact that they just wrote his death as walking into a troop of federation soldiers was ANNOYING! it's stated that he does die but like WTH!
