This book does exactly what it sets out to do. The first in the series was good but by this point the authors have really found their footing. The mystery is engaging without being too tense or overdone. You’re able to put some of the pieces together yourself but don’t get the full picture until the final reveal. The small town and cast of characters is comforting and inviting. Cold Clay is the perfect cozy mystery for fall

I really enjoyed this book, I loved the development of the characters and seeing the characters grow from the previous book and also learning more about the new characters as the story continues. I actually was able to guess who the killer was about halfway through the book, but I could not really guess the motive fo the killer and how the incident happened, but also I think the authors added great foreshadowing and let Vera slowly uncover the truth behind the bones. I think the killer was quite and intriguing character and learning more and more about their back story and the reasoning behind their actions led me to further understand the character and their earlier actions. Vera did come across a few clues that I did not pick up and I really liked seeing her go out of her way to find out. I think Vera and Orville's story was a good plot line and helped the development of the book and also showed how capable Vera was as a detective (or in her words her job as an investigative journalist). I liked seeing more of BW and also the other characters at the Herald and I'm hoping to learn more about them in future books!! I really liked watching Vera interact with Esme and watching her grow from a rich heiress to a waitress as Joe's Mug and seeing her become a much better person. I also liked Joe Junior's character and I'm hoping to see him more in future books as well :) As always, I loved Lenore and I liked that we got to know her even more and seeing her at work at the bookstore (although it kind of did take away from the mystery but I think it wasn't that bad as it let Vera cool down and rest a bit while also introducing a new character) Overall, I really enjoyed this and will be reading the rest of the series!!

Just like the first installment of Shady Hollow, Cold Clay is a perfect, bite-sized cozy mystery. It leads you through the charming town of Shady Hollow and introduces you a delightful cast of characters, both familiar and new. The mystery may not be as strong, but the steady stream of clues makes you feel like you're solving it alongside Vera at a much more even pace than the first installment in the series.
