This was like a Twilight wanna be but with a focus on wolves.

I hated the characters.  Genuinely really couldn’t care about them.  Grace treated her friends and family like shit, all of her attention is on her wolf.  She is incapable of empathy apparently.  Sam is so whiny and nearly has insufferable as Grace.  And their romance was giving nothing, they was zero chemistry between them.

This was a re-read for me! My first time reading it, I was in high school at the peak of my Twilight phase, and I gave it 5 stars. I was worried that it wouldn't hold up now that I'm 27 (and somehow still at the peak of my Twilight phase); but it absolutely did! I'm honestly surprised that this series isn't still talked about more. The writing is beautiful and really transports you to the enchanting woods of Mercy Falls. (Most) of the characters are impossible not to love (they could never make me like you @ Shelby). And the story... the story has me so scared because this book was perfect, and I never finished the series, so what do you mean there's MORE?!? 😅 I feel like I also have to mention that some of the things in this book blew my mind due to it being a YA with no TW's (2009 was a different time) 😅 but this is one of the books that made me who I am. It helped shape my interests as a reader and fall more in love with reading. Forever grateful, and if you haven't read it- I highly recommend! ♡

On a reread, knowing more about the context and the target audience, I see how this book accomplishes what it set out to - provide a teen romance for Team Jacob readers, with all the angst befitting a paranormal romance. I can understand it on a craft level without understanding it on an emotional level.
CW: parental abuse (including cutting), parental abandonment, guns

I enjoyed The Raven Cycle books by Stiefvater, but this book was an absolute bail by 15%. It had all the qualities of YA lit that I hated as a teen, the same qualities that made me avoid Twilight. If you like werewolves and romance and don't mind teen drama that makes no sense, horrible friends that are supposed to be childhood best friends (???), weird responses, unexplained obsessive attraction, and awkward descriptions, pick this one!

This review is totally biased. I read this book in middle school and I absolutely fell in love, so it's my comfort series. Is it objectively bad? Maybe, but it holds a place in my heart, just like Twilight. There was nothing more I wanted to do than avoid my problems and disappear into the golden wood like Grace. I mean... who wouldn't want a hot werewolf boyfriend to show up at your door? I love the imagery and prose, to be honest. I love the way the wolves communicate through mind pictures, and I thought their shape shifting being triggered by the heat was unique.
