This book was chugging merrily along at 4-4.5 stars for about two thirds of the book and then BAM! In true SJM fashion, the last 120ish pages or so had ALL the things happen and so many feels. It was that plus the masterfully clever way in which Aelin took down Arobynn and basically thought of every scenario which bumped it up to a full 5 stars for me.

I have been loving watching Aelin transition into the queen she was born to be. And I hope as the story continues she starts to trust and rely on her court more. They were so instrumental in how things played out, but Aelin kept so many things close to the vest. So I hope she realizes that she can trust others outside herself and not be let down anymore. And I was just floored by how clever she was throughout the whole book with her planning. From Aedion’s rescue, to the take down of Arobynn, to destroying the clock tower, and saving Dorian, everything was so well thought out and executed.

I’m also really enjoying the found family dynamic that’s happening within Aelin’s court with Rowan, Aedion, and Lysandra and with Chaol, Nesryn, and even Dorian thrown in there too. I was really skeptical of Lysandra at first with them becoming such fast friends after how they had interacted in Heir of Fire and The Assassin’s Blade. But she grew on me quickly as we found out how much she helped Aelin with her schemes and the fact that she was willing to risk her life for them even before magic had returned and she became a badass shifter (which I absolutely loved btw). The evolution of Aedion and Rowan’s relationship from butting heads as “territorial fae brutes” to Aedion being willing to lay his life down for Rowan as his “brother” was fun to watch.

Chaol kind of became a wet blanket for a good chunk of this book, which was really disappointing to me. I feel like he was using Aelin as a scapegoat for everything to make himself feel less guilty for running away and leaving Dorian to be enslaved by the king. I also, for some reason, still wanted him to be hung up on Aelin, but neither of them have feelings for the other anymore, which also really bummed me out. Chaol was definitely lowered a few notches in this book for me, but he redeemed himself fairly well by the end of the book.

I’m liking Manon and her Thirteen more and more as the story goes on and am excited to see how she ultimately breaks from her grandmother and (hopefully

Keeps getting better

This series just keeps on getting better for me.
I’m so glad I stuck with it and didn’t give up in the middle of book three like I did before.
The character development was brilliant across the board.
I love being inside different characters heads to see things from there side.
Looking forward to the next!

04/2024:
This book was even better the second time around. My heart is so full of so many things. Asterin’s description of love is exactly how this book (and series) makes me feel. This is probably one of my favorite books of the entire series. 5 ⭐️ all around

With this series each book truly gets better. This was the redemption novel I needed for these characters and also I know that great heartbreak is coming. This is by far my favorite installment of the series.
