Michka is a French Jewish woman coming to the end of her life who is losing her words and obsessed with saying thank you to the couple who sheltered her as a child during the war.
The book shows that words of gratitude matter, but deeds matter more - as an adult, Michka cared for a girl who lived in her apartment building, who is now grown up and caring for Michka in turn, passing on the baton of kindness and turning a stranger into family.
The blurb indicates that this is a dark tale - it really isn't. There's a brief mention of the Holocaust, depictions of the indignity of old age and the pain of watching someone you care for fade away, but ultimately it's a story of love, compassion and hope.
Shout out to the translator who did an excellent job of depicting Michka's aphasia in English.
