I read this book slowly because it’s pretty dense with exposition and lore information. But, I still really enjoyed it, and I can’t wait to see the main relationship blossom. The last chapter had me kicking my feet so I’m excited to see where it goes.

Ok, so I actually watched the first two seasons of donghua during quarantine. It was all very confusing to me back then, and because I couldn't grasp it as well, I didn't feel connected to the characters. Then, this year I finally got to read the first volume, and it was so good. I love Wei Ying and his banter with Lan Zhan. I understand the plot so much better now. I'll definitely rewatch the donghua and also Untamed, the series. Coming back to the book, though, I don't think there's much for me to specify other than the fact that I loved it. My favorite thing would absolutely be the dialogues between characters. I physically laughed so many times reading this, and it was hilarious. I absolutely cannot wait to read the second book.

Took me longer than expected. But I'm starting to see why people adore Lan Zhan. Wei Wuxian was sooooo cute though I loved him. The translation did piss me off but then it just got to the point that I was used to it so it wasn't that much of a struggle. Could have been better though, how did they let this through??

All. The. STARS! This was utterly amazing. I'm a fan of Chinese webnovels, but I don't usually go for wuxia, or danmei. I picked this up after seeing it all over BookTube and it astounded me with the sheer amount of hilarity, feels, and fantasticness!

I LOVED Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangqi - they were hilarious and adorable and it was fun to compare their current dynamic to their dynamic in the childhood flashback.

In general, this story had a lot of complicated dynamics, and Wei Wuxian clearly has a complex personal history (which entwines with larger history) that will be unpacked and explored more in later books.

The action scenes were fun, if occasionally a bit creepy (although in a fun, vibey way). It was quite fun when Lan Zhan and Wei Yang played the guqin and flute together. I haven't seen The Untamed but I did listen to the soundtrack while reading the book. I definitely want to check it out now, along with the rest of this series!

Overall, this was an incredible read, and I can see why so many people have been raving about it. It was utterly delicious! 5 stars.

So cool. Just cool. Like I’m sure many others did, I watched The Untamed and NEEDED more of this story. If I hadn’t googled terminology and skimmed through fan translations when watching the show, I probably would have been lost in the novel.
