This was an improvement on the first book. I liked Rose much better, and I think she grew up in a big way. She's a strong character, and I enjoyed seeing her put through some tough situations. Also, I think she learned to keep an open mind, and she definitely learned the price of being a guardian. I look forward to the next book.

I tend to punch first and then find out who I actually hit later.
This one really killed me.

OH MY GOD I WAS NOT EXPECTING THAT TURN OF EVENTS NEAR THE END! Mason... My poor baby boy, I was crying so hard when he died I didn't even believe it I was basically crying the whole time after that. I couldn't even read the pages they were blurry from my tears!
I felt that Rose matures through out this book especially at the end, although she was really petty about the whole Dimitri Tasha thing. She was really bad ass and a great Guardian and leader and I still love her (although from the point where they got captured I was screaming for one of them to use magic I was so shocked that none of them used it for as Long as they did it just didn't make sense to me) And even though she was going to crush masons heart I was Glad that she gave him hope at the end, so that he thought there was a chance and he died knowing that rose had feeling for him. I just can't get over how he could have just died!
There was so much sadness in this book, with the fights rose and her mum and Mia's Mother dying and mason dying and then at the end when she was crying on her Mother I just broke down, it was at that point that I started actually sobbing. At first I didn't want rose to even be speaking to her Mother but by the middle I just wanted them to get along, her Mother has been through so much and it wasn't fair of rose to act that way, or her Mother to act that way. The fact that her Mother had her young and didn't know what to do doesn't excuse that her Mother should have made more of an effort to keep in touch with rose.
Adrian pissed me of slightly through out the book but by the end he had won me over, although I understand the smoking and drinking, my own morals are holding me back from truly going for him. But I'm sure he might win me over because he's actually helping now.
I like Dimitri but I'm not sure about him and Rose being together I mean it could by good and fun while it lasts but I'm sure it's going to end soo I'm trying not to get too attached to that ship.
Anyway Vasilisa and Christian were cute during this but annoying at some points because why don't you spend time with your best Friend?! The one who dedicated her life to protecting you and she's not even your Guardian yet! I was annoyed about that and I wanted Rose to confide in her and talk about what was going on! Because honestly she's your best Friend for a reason you have to talk to her.
Anyway that's all I can remember about this book it was a bit slow in the beginning but it picked up near the end. I really liked it and I'm excited to read the next one!

thought this was another good book in the series. We get to see Rose develop more and more, although Lissa has a much smaller role. The Moroi are in danger and so the academy and families head to the ski resort for Christmas vacation. Although Rose doesn't intend to look for danger, she decides to save her friends and in turn danger finds her. We meet her mother as well as a new character who will likely appear in the next. Love the Rose/Dmitri parts, but there just aren't enough of them :)

I do not really like this entire vampire universe. I think Richelle Mead is an extraordinary author when it comes to make an intriguing plot story, but when it comes to universe-building (to make this fantasy universe make sense between one condition to another) she is not good enough. I personally think it doesn't make sense how Moroi never use magic even just a little bit of it to fight Strigoi. If you say that magic is sacred, well, you don't have to kill with that magic, you can just use it to help the Dhampir. And that was just one of the many reasons why this kind of universe bugs me.
Though I really have to highlight that I like the story in this book, even when actually it really starts to get real interesting around the last 50 pages. Oh, one more thing, I care about the characters and really would like to see what this series has in store for them.
Anyway, don't you think Christian and Rose make a cute couple? ♡

rose’s im not like other girls syndrome was so much more prominent in this one than the others. though having good pacing, this one wasnt as “exciting” to me as the first one was until the end action scene. then the end really pmo because miss richelle why are you 31 writing about a 24 and a 17 year old having an “i want you so bad but i cant have you” relationship. while also always making sure to emphasize how young he thinks she is LIKEEEE BE FR. you were raised in michigan not a third world country where its “normal” for teens to date full grown adults.

A little better than the first in the series. The writing was a lot better and Rose wasn't as cringe, but this book still lacked a plot. Nothing really "happened" until the last quarter of the book.

I didn’t really feel anything happened in this book…? I dunno…it felt a bit juvenile, but not in an endearing or cutesy way. The writing was very basic and the storyline just didn’t grab me. I still like Christian best of all, but he’s not enough to save this series for me.
I’ll likely continue through the third one since I own it, but I won’t be buying the later books; if I read them, I’ll just get them from the library.
