I adore this author and many of his books, but this was an absolute slog. And for such a short story, that is saying something. To me, it utterly lacked nuance and I was constantly waiting for the other shoe to drop on this commentary ... But it never came. I appreciate the intent of the message, but I felt like I was being bludgeoned with it. The only reason this wasn't a DNF was because of how short it is..

I think the author is successful enough when it comes to portraying the brutality and paranoia stemming from gun violence and how far America could potentially go down in future if the current trends persist, but I felt like the whole thing was a bit over the top, dragged on for longer than necessary and ended way too quick. Perhaps it was intentional but it left me feeling <b>meh</b> nonetheless. While I appreciate the message it was trying to deliver, unfortunately it just wasn't much of an interesting read for me overall.
