"skulduggery pleasant came into focus as what he really was — a genius, a killer, a tortured soul, and the only true dead man among them."

i am so empty inside. i honestly don't know what to feel. this book was a straight up massacre. my heart hurts.

I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO PREDICTIONS FOR HOW THIS SHITSHOW IS GOING TO END.

i love fletcher, which is nothing new. the boy carries a book around with him wherever he goes??? please. say less.

skulduggery pleasant is the love of my life. i just want him to be happy. EVERYTHING IS TAKEN FROM HIM.

“skulduggery, darling, you do hate yourself.” <<< PLEASE I CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE

also china and skulduggery?? ngl i thought there was history there but i love it so much. it's so complex. it's so fucked up. china is one of the most multi-faceted characters i've EVER read. you want morally grey? she's the BLUEPRINT. i love her. (she's heard that before.)

this quote pretty much sums it up: "she was looking at the end of the world, and it was wearing her face."

HOW AM I EVER SUPPOSED TO RECOVER

For anyone who is reading this review, I hope you have already read this book, as well as the previous seven, because there will be some spoilers.

First and foremost, this is the first Skulduggery Pleasant book that I have even considered giving a lower score than five.

Of course it was fantastic. Of course it was witty. Of course it was incredibly all-consuming.

However, Derek Landy seemed, for the first time, to kind of... be lazy about his rules and writing.

For instance, there are several times when Fletcher teleports someone who, as far as I am aware, has never been teleported. For instance, Ajouga, the Bride of Blood Tears, or Bane and O'Callahan, and others.

Another thing, the cloaking spheres? They didn't seem to have a time limit as they are meant to.
Odd.

Lastly, the book was somewhat confusing. I blinked, went "What?," blinked again and couldn't figure a few things out. When Ravel gives his speech, and the shunter.... somehow... brings an alternate reality's Roarhaven to... well, Roarhaven. What? How? When did they build this? How? Who built it? No one knew about it? How did he shunt it over? I just do not get it. :/

Unfortunately, there were a couple of other scenarios that confused me as well, but I am not going to get into them.
Basically, it was written less strictly and uniformly as usual.

The goods still outweigh the bads, though. The characters are wonderful, stay true to their personalities, and develop. The plotline is brilliant. The ideas fantastic and believable. The fights? Amazing! I was just telling my mom how much I have grown to love the battles, not for the craziness or gore or death, but because no one cares about honor or dignity- only winning, in any way he possibly can. They fight dirty, and I love it.
It was a wonderful book, terrible, sad, but wonderful, which is absolutely to be expected of Derek Landy, and I absolutely enjoyed it.

[And by the way, Derek Landy, I don't hate you as you thought I would. I don't know if you could do anything to make me hate you... Unless you kill off Skulduggery or Saracen. I love Saracen too much. DON'T DO IT!]
