A beloved story to me, and enjoyable audiobook. I was glad to listen to abridged version, although did miss some things left out of this edition: her punishment in school, her drawings, her time on the moors .

Writing style was a bit longwinded and hard for me to follow.
I ended up reading the manga version and I wasn't interested enough in the plot to attempt the novel version again, but maybe in the future I'll try again.

"Reader, I married him."
Well, well, well...I had no idea those classic words were from Jane Eyre. What a revelation.
I decided it was time to re-read that book (Jane Eyre) that cured me of motion sickness as a child. (This probably needs some explanation).
As a child, the family regularly drove 150 miles to visit my Granny in Yorkshire. I suffered from terrible motion sickness for which my mother tried every remedy- with mixed success. However, one time I had just started reading Jane Eyre and was so entranced I couldn't put the book down despite being in the car (a previously disastrous combination). Low-and-behold, I was so absorbed that we arrived in Yorkshire before I knew it... and no sickness. The book was so good it made me forget to be ill.
Move forward several decades and I decided to re-read this classic and see if it had stood the test of time. Happily, yes, it has. Ms Bronte's observations on the human spirit and cutting observations on character as shockingly perceptive. And to top it all she writes a cracking good yarn. A true classic that is worthy but also hugely enjoyable. There are badies, there are goodies, there are people partly good and partly bad, and all are served up with lashings of perception and spirited common sense.
"Reader, I married him." Absolutely right she did!
