feel like herron fully nailed the formula here. gogol doing lecarre but also some conrad (secret sharer) and martin amis (i still have a soft spot for London Fields although i dont care for his overall project). both a nod to and an utter mockery of bourne-y superspy thrillers. also dickens too, can't deny it. it's a melodrama that keeps threatening to be art and the threats are really enjoyable

Wonderful read. Re-read to see what changes the tv series had made to the original. Jackson Lamb is one of the great creations of espionage literature.

I have been enjoying the Slough House series, and with season four being released, I knew I needed to listen to this audiobook so as to appreciate it without spoilers.

David Cartwright is becoming senile. What kind of danger does he pose? Could MI5 secrets become revealed in careless ways? A terror event is also putting pressure on the government.

As the other events are explored, we also learn more of River's parentage and how he came to be raised by his grandfather.

We are back, back, back, back again with the Slow Horse crew! And what a ride this book was. Most likely the best book in the series so far.
.
What starts with a flash mob undertaking one of the worst attacks on British soil unlocks a secret off books mission undertaken by the Old Bastard in a post Cold War world.
.
River is worried that the Old Bastard is losing his mind in old age, and the secrets he has kept from his time in the Service may come to light. And he is right, in a way.
.
When someone shows up at the O.Bs door and tried to silence him, things start to go wrong and River tasks himself of finding why someone tried to kill his grandfather.
.
A trip to France takes him to a commune of kinds, and back to a wet London where there rest of the Slow Horses are dealing with the other half of the hit squad.
.
Throw in some revealing family history, and of course some high level espionage. Naturally a few bodies end up littering the path towards the big reveal. But this book was a grand spy thriller from start to finish. Here’s hoping the rest of the series continues this trajectory

Outstanding again.  Really love these books.  Just the right amount of humour to make you laugh and spiralled storyline to keep you guessing.
