Please be prepared for the emotional rollercoaster of this book. It’s absolutely amazing and beautiful but I did cry. I personally lost my mum a few years ago and this book definitely touched that nerve, however it was absolutely beautiful to hear these stories, to have these wonderful memories shared. (Also definitely check the author’s tick-tock where she shares more stories like this, that’s how I found the book)

I follow nurse Hadley on TikTok and was really excited to read her book. A nurse myself, I often come in contact with end of life patients. I work in geropsych so most of mine are late stage dementia and I feel like Hadley has given me a bit of a look into what happens after we recommend hospice. Comfort and a good death with dignity looks different for everyone and this is a good showcase of that.

I think this book would leave anyone, regardless of religion, faith, or lack thereof, with some peace and hope. I always worry that books about the end of life process are going to leave me even more anxious about what comes next than I was before I read them, but this just brought me peace. I wouldn’t call Nurse Hadley’s experiences jaw-dropping, but I would say that they are small, believable moments that I wish I had experienced myself. I’m so grateful she has written this to share with others. I imagine if I was reading this at the end of my own life, it would bring me peace. And now, as someone who grew up Christian but whose faith has changed a lot over the years, I feel great comfort in reading this book.

Two things I would have liked:
1) I wish there was a little more detail about each patient. I was left wanting more!
2) This relates to the first thing, but I saw lots of Hadley’s TikToks before reading the book and I felt like she gave away too much in her previews of the book. I thought for some patients that reading the book would give me a deeper dive into their lives than the TikTok previews did, and I really felt like the TikTok previews proved to be a little too much of “spoilers,” almost. I’m still glad I read it though!!!

I really appreciate that even after all her experiences, she isn’t pushing religion. She’s just sharing that she believes her experiences point to “something” coming next.
