I loved this book, but the fact that I knew that most of the narrators would die in the end made it hard to finish.

I had been looking forward to reading this one because I knew so little about the subject matter. I was aware only peripherally of Rafael Trujillo and the Mirabal sisters, but had never read any actual books about that time. Now I need to find some non-fiction!

Julia Alvarez became interested in Las Mariposas as a child after her family was forced to flee the brutality of the Trujillo regime and emigrate to the United States. Her goal was to portray the sisters as humans and not just activists and martyrs.

Read if you enjoy being immersed in the voices of strong, flawed, idealistic women fighting to change their world.
