Read aloud to Holly. She is did not enjoy this as much as most of the sci-fi I read to her (it needs more Clarke and less Gentry Lee).

I typically can't allow myself to not finish a book, particularly if I'm going to write a review on it. However, not only could I not finish this book but I also feel burdened to warn others about it. This book is a dramatic departure from the first (which I loved) in terms of quality and themes. The book attempts to be more character driven but ends up boring and meandering with chapters devoted to meaningless facts that it doesn't come back to. I decided to stop and just look up what happens in the rest of the story. From everything I have seen and heard from other people as well, I have made the right decision.

I didn't really start liking this book until near the end. You can tell the Aurthur C. Clarke probably didn't write any of it. The other guy did. And the other guy is clearly not a big of a nerd as Clarke, as there isn't as much focus on cool nerd stuff as the first book.
I wanted this book to be like the first one, about the cool space ship. But this sequel is more focused on the characters, who I wasn't really interested in. There is so much backstory that for the first half of the book I'm just like "get to the damn space ship already!".
And then they get to the space ship, and it starts getting cool. But then there is more backstory. And by the end of the book, we haven't really learned much else about Rama or the Ramans. None of the questions left hanging from the first book are answered. I guess that's okay because we are lead to believe there should be three books. I haven't read the third book yet, but I have a feeling that this second book could have been skipped.
