what became of magic starts with lonely Aline making friends at a sleepover with a ghost girl while all of the human man girls decide to make Aline public enemy number one at school for being weird. She ages up having only her ghost friend and the three sweet old ladies who run the local bookstore where she can be herself. Then she finds out magic is real, and a person, and there's a woman wanting to take over the world. And its a lot.
It's a lot, and none of it is given the space to breath. You're introduced to characters and immediately told that Aline sees them as family, and the only one I find that believable about is Dragon and Magic. That said, Magic and Aline relationship is just... nonsensical. It jumps around, at one point I thought there were two guys- no it was just Magic who, for no reason that's ever explained, acts? looks? like someone else for a bit. It's a mess.
I still don't understand how the magic system works. Or how the MAGICs work? It's a lot of building, without caring if it makes a world.

DNF; the characters are so confusing & I feel like I couldn’t follow the storyline well. the dialogue is hard to follow because everyone does speak in riddles. I wish it could’ve entertained me enough to finish it but I couldn’t get through it.

A beautiful story where we get to watch Aline find her place in a magical world after living a life where she never felt like she belonged. A life where she was invisible to most, and above all felt unworthy of others' attention. This book was unlike anything that I have read, and I found the writing to be poetic, full of riddles, and honestly overwhelming at times. Although this book is slower than my normal reads, I think it has to be in order for you to be able to fully process the depth of what is happening and find the real beauty in the story that unfolds.

A surprisingly comforting and cozy-adjacent fairytale. I couldn't help but channel the song "Storybook Love" from The Princess Bride (movie) while reading this. Seriously, give it a listen, the lyrics hit when it comes to the Romance sprinkled within.
This checked several of my favorite themes; magic, witches, greek mythology, outcasts, meant-to-be love, and found family, to name a few. I also loved the riddles, I'm a fan, regardless of being terrible at them or whether or not they make any sense...
I would've loved for this book to have been longer, particularly in exploring the town of Matchstick!
Thanks to NetGalley for the eARC!
