The main character is a teenage girl named Alex, who has become increasingly superstitious when her father passes away. She is superstition to the point where she does not want to celebrate her 13th birthday since 13 is an unlucky number. After arguing with her mother she decides to step on a crack to break her mothers back... and it actually happened. Not going to lie, I laughed when Alex rushed in her house and her mom was on the floor.

So the rest of the time we see Alex doing whatever it takes to save her mother and that includes fighting bad guys in a magical place that is hiding a pretty bad secret. Really fun read with refreshing dialogue that actually made me chuckle a few times. Although, this could have been spread out to 2 graphic novels so that way the pace didn't seem to rush.

Also, was not a fan of the artwork.

I thought that the premise for this was clever, and I enjoyed the positive message. I liked the art, but it was a bit hit-or-miss for me. Sometimes it was more loose and scratchy than I would prefer, but there were some panels, especially the ones that play with shadow that I loved.

Definitely a unique fantasy read, despite some familiar tropes. How it plays with the tropes (chosen one, family legacy, twists/reveals) makes it worth a read. (e-galley from NetGalley)

I don't know what it is, but I have really been enjoying stories like this. It takes fairy tale elements and puts it into a modern setting. There is a mixture of the real world and a fantasy world that complement each other nicely. In this story, Alex is a young lady that is turning thirteen and her world revolves around superstitions. When one of them threatens her mother's life, she sets out on a journey to find a cure.

The fairy tale elements and the superstitions are great. The real winner for me is the characters. The book takes a decent amount of time establishing Alex's history and her motivation. That could give it a slow start for some, but it pays off. The supporting characters are wonderful too. I found them to be funny and they worked well within Alex's story. I loved the art. It is perfect for the story without being too cartoony.

A fun graphic novel. Alex was a great protagonist, and I really enjoyed the concept of the importance of superstitions in this story!

Haphaven was a nice story about a very superstitious girl who travels to Haphaven, a world filled with leprechauns harvesting salt and clovers, who tries to find out where all her bad luck is coming from.

It took some time for me to get into the story, even as Alex traveled to Haphaven, but at a certain time its charm won me over and I especially enjoyed the last part of it. There was more to the story than I at first anticipated, which was nice. The art was nice too, but not something very special or memorable.

All in all, a very nice read.
