I love romance novels but am an infrequent reader of paranormal romances. I have a soft spot for authors such as Darynda Jones, Kelli McCracken, and Shelly Crane though because I feel they do the genre justice. While reading this book I felt as if I had read the premise again and again in previous books and there was nothing extremely original about the paranormal aspect of it. The characters were endearing but their dialogue seemed stilted and repetitive to me. Also, I felt as if Danielle barely had a reaction when Ethan revealed to her that he was a vampire which was an issue for me. Overall I felt as if the book was overly melodramatic in some places and lacking in energy in others. One positive thing I can say about the book is that as of now it is free for Kindles on Amazon so if you're curious about it, get it!

The Fateful series by Cheri A Schmidt has a different and refreshing take on vampires. I like how the vampires are put together and describes. They are more human during the day and more of a bloodthirsty vampire by night.

Danielle is the main character and the one the books follow. This character is such a huge fan of Jane Austen that she herself is Jane Austen to a "T"! Danielle is a huge girly girl, but she took Karate since her parents made her to make her "stronger". She is a very complex character, but at the same time simple and easy to understand. One thing Danielle wanted when she moved to England was to meet her Mr. Darcy and she does...

Ethan (Danielle's Mr. Darcy) was a true gentleman despite the centuries he has lived through. His jealous and possessiveness come off as sweet and funny considering he can use a sword, and treat a girl like a lady. When these two met, it was like they both already knew they were in love.

I really enjoyed the fact this book had morals. Most books you read, the couple would sleep together after a little bit, but these two waited until marriage which is what both of them wanted. Ethan wanted this because of his centuries old age and Danielle wanted it because it meant something more to her. They took on present day issues along with paranormal ones. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to get into paranormal romances or is a Jane Austen fan. Of course anyone else would love this series as well.

I really, really liked this book! I found that after awhile, I couldn't put it down. I loved that it took place in London. I loved the twist to the vampire story and the Frog Prince references. I think the writing is better in this book than Twilight, and I love Ethan's personality better than Edward's. There were some small similarities to Twilight, but I liked Ms. Schmidt's cursed version and the fact that Ethan is more a Mr. Darcy type. I also liked that Danielle is a black belt in Karate and has a strong personality. I liked the moral messages in this book and the tension that develops from Ethan's struggles. I liked Ms. Schmidt's take on vampirism and her inclusion of other mythical creatures. I also loved the humor in this book. At times, Twilight can be overly dark and moody. This book has some laugh out loud moments in it that I just loved. Overall, this is a fun, quick, enjoyable read. I'm on to read Fractured!

Review:

I have to admit, even before I downloaded this one, I was skeptical. I don’t normally judge books by their covers, but this one pretty much screamed Twilight to me. And whilst I didn’t completely hate Twilight, that worried me. Since Twilight, there have been a lot of Twilight-alike’s after all.

I have to admit, because of that, I wasn’t overly surprised with what I found inside. I’m not saying that the story was completely unoriginal, because it wasn’t. It’s just that the start of the story starts very much in the way Twilight does – human girl is saved by do-gooder vampire. Admittedly, there’s the twist that Danielle is American compared to Ethan who is English. That, and Cheri Schmidt has at least made vampires which are lethal, and taken vampire mythology into account. I liked that about the book.

However, I did have issues with the fact that Ethan, his family and Danielle’s family were meant to be English. I kind of felt that this was by far overstated, as if the book being set in London wasn’t quite enough. They kept doing very stereotypically British things, like taking afternoon tea and eating fish and chips and cucumber sandwiches. As a fellow English person, I don’t remember the last time my friends and I went out for afternoon tea. To be fair, we’re as likely to have a cuppa in the office, made using a teabag and an electric kettle. In some ways I liked it – but it didn’t feel authentic, I think is what I’m looking for.

That said, the latter part of the book was definitely better for me. I mean, I could still draw the Twilight comparisons. But the story did veer off in its own direction, and I kind of liked the direction it took.

Overall, this wasn’t my favourite read of 2012, but it definitely wasn’t bad. I won’t be rushing out to read the other two books in the series, but I wouldn’t rule out reading them either. I have to admit, I hope the Britishisms are a little less overplayed in the next one, and I hope that the direction taken at the end of this book is continued.

Generally, a good read – I’d say it’s one for the Twilight fans, and probably fairly well suited to younger teens.

Overall rating: 3/5
Writing: 3/5
Originality: 3/5
Characters: 3/5
My Enjoyment: 3/5

One big long vampire date with a smidge of drama toward the end. Not super engaging, not utterly unique. And not clear why they chose a male to narrate the audio.

Okay,

So sorry that it's taken me this long...

To say the least, I absolutely fell in LOVE with this book. It was very well written w/an amazing story line... I know, I know, it follows the whole vampire falls for the girl line... BUT, trust me, it's NOTHING like Twilight. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the Twilight Saga, but not every thing has to be like that...

Cheri definitely captivated me with this book... So much so, that after I read this book in ONE day, I turned around and bought the next book Fearful the VERY NEXT day...

Ethan is such a gentleman and absolutely adorable... And Danielle, I loved that she was such a girly girl that knew how to defend herself if needed to...

I enjoyed how Danielle see's Ethan as HER Mr. Darcy, given that she's such a Jane Austen fan... (Secretly, so am I!!!) I enjoyed mostly that it was such a clean read... It was a very good book and the romance in the book was very sweet!

Cheri definitely has a fan in me!!!

P.S.

I loved this book soo much, that I actually let my nieces (who are about 16yrs) borrow it... (I know, I'm very picky when it comes to my books!)

I only made it about 60 pages into this - the writing is just bad. Everything is told to us, nothing is shown - even Danielle's internal dialogue can't quite figure out how to construct a sentence. For example: "They could turn into a bat or puff of mist to travel. That would be cool, not that she bought into it though. On and on it mentioned cliché after cliché." I won't even get started on shifting tenses and the over-the-top reactions characters had - like the number of times Danielle gasps in normal situations (she gasps when she notices a library book has a stain on it - really? And this conversation seriously took place: "Oh no!" she gasped. "What's wrong?" "I fell asleep?")

This one is going onto the "Unreadable" shelf.

I saw a blog post about this author-published e-book and since it wasn't expensive, I thought I'd get it for my Kindle. A lot of things in the story reminded me of Twilight (similar plot situations), although the ending took a different twist. Overall I enjoyed it.
