  • What I liked: I liked the play on Norse mythology with the magic in the alternate universe he ends up in. I like that both the
cop he's friends with and the gang he was actually in
are full of trash people which is very realistic. I liked that in the end he got to
stay with Sefawynn without hurting the wights
. Really concerned about what that alternate universe's Loki is doing
with his laptop though that's sus as hell and very in character for him
. I liked the version of Vikings in this book, too, and that the magic of this world was in being able to read, but it was done in a way that wasn't childish cringe/tacky but in a way that actually worked really really well
  • What I disliked: It was misleading in the title in that it sounded like fantasy-fiction which is what he TYPICALLY WRITES and was actually science fiction. That
    it started off convincing us
the main character is a cop in a sci-fi novel which almost made me DNF it
  • Overall thoughts: A really cool book with an interesting take on alternate universes and that supposedly magic isn't real in any of them
and yet he found the one real fantasy world
. The cross over between sci-fi and fantasy that happened in this book.
That it WASN'T the cop book it felt like it was in the beginning and that the romance in the book wasn't the whole point of the book but it was a nice side plot.
That the whole book was the main character redefining who he is to himself and eventually figures out who he wants to be and
helps save this alternate reality and build a home there where he felt wanted and appreciated.
Finding himself and making a home
  • Recommend to a friend? Y but would depend on the friend

A Douglas Adams-esque science fantasy that I thoroughly enjoyed! It's entirely possible that non-Sanderson readers are enjoying the secret project books better than the Sanderson fans. We go in with no expectations and are immensely entertained. This one is humorous, but not frothy, and pulls together the adventuring, the fantasy, the sci-fi, and the human story quite well by the end.

It started out kind of confusing and slow, but about a third of the way through it started picking up and I did enjoy it. It’s not my favorite of Sanderson’s worldbuilding- it was a bit confusing and some parts
like people from Earth having a weird effect on beings from the book’s dimension
didn’t make a ton of sense- but overall it was enjoyable and fun. I always love a character finally standing up for themselves and becoming a new person, and John’s character development was really good. It’s almost 4 stars, but because I still feel confused it’s not quite there.

Excellent writing, really weird plot and I just don't totally get the point of this book. Which is sad because I felt like it should have been good

Five stars, page turner. Anything I say will be a spoiler but I'm a sucker for SFF that can make me laugh. Very original concept with some good old tropes like "wakes up with no memories" and side comment footnotes.

I am an eternal B Sands stan, but this wasn't really it for me. I liked the format of the special edition I have, and the concept is sound. But some of the themes didn't quite land.

The amnesia felt like a convenience rather than a driving plot point.  A cute story. Feels more like an amateur fan fic than a fully developed novel.
