A great collection of great novellas. Though they're all good, my favourites are definitely The Ballad of Black Tom by Victor Lavalle and Hammers on Bone by Cassandra Khaw, though the other two also were good, solid reads.

It's exciting that even Lovecraft's legacy is marred by his prejudiced and awful views, authors such as these can reinvent the horrors of his world in a new light while cutting out the bad.

The Ballad of Black Tom: 4.5/5 - For H.P Lovecraft, with all my conflicted feelings
What I didn't like about this story was that it was the only one that used the n-word which defeated the point a bit in my opinion. The word added nothing to the story.

The Dream-Quest of Vellit Boe: 4/5 - For everyone who had to find her own way
More adventure than horror but still a fun ride.

Hammers on Bone: 3.5/5 - To all the monsters hiding in this world, I hope the children will skin you alive. To the children in the world, let no one say you can't make monsters bleed
The story has a very strong noir vibe. P.I’s are also “gumshoes,” girls are “skirts” or “birds” etc.

Agents of Dreamland: 3/5 - Eventually you’ve got to understand that an answer isn’t the same thing as a solution, and a story is sometimes only an excuse – Nic Pizzolatto
It’s told in a very jumbled way that made it hard to connect to. I feel it would have been more effective if it was just a normal story.

I loved the concept behind the collection. It allowed me to get a taste of Lovecraftian world and literature without having to read Lovecraft himself. I look forward to trying more books like this.

reading this took forever b/c i try to avoid skipping parts of a collection but the dream quest of vellit boe would not end and the dreamland thing is meh anyway. like ion even really care about l*vecraft but victor lavalle is like reading pure distilled Knuck If You Buck.mp3 n i been knew about cass khaw so this was honestly an exercise in patience

tbh if they hadn’t put the strongest two novellas first, i mighta actually finished it in a reasonable amount of time
