4.5 really.
Another simply solid book by Abercrombie. Nobody writes characters quite like he does, certainly not morally grey characters that genuinely feel real. I have enjoyed every book in the First Law world, each for slightly different reasons. Beyond the great depiction of battle, brilliant writing and gripping scenes, nostalgia definitely played a part in my enjoyment of this book. Catching up with beloved characters from the original trilogy was fantastic.

A great addition to the First Law books and if you enjoy the world, writing and characters, then you certainly won't be disappointed by this addition.

The Northmen feel like the most fully formed culture in The First Law world. Not to say that Abercrombie does a poor job with the others, more that they just fit with the worldview so well.
Gripping read and enjoyed all of the characters arcs and introspections.

Lot different than all the previous entries in the first law world. The setting is a single place and the entire noon takes places in a 3 day span. Stupendous amount of cha agreed but Abercrombie took the care to introduce them all. It felt like some characters are similar but they had enough differences to be palatable. The problem is that none of the characters were memorable.

The continuous battle perspective change was done with care and it certainly delivered. The book once again like his other books reads like a movie script than a novel. But unlike a movie, this book has 5 climaxes each other better than the previous one.

Favorite quote: “Savor the little moments.”

Not much of a plot, but I guess that’s the point of this book.
