The original is far more tragic than the Disney version, and honestly I like it more. A simple story about wanting something different than one's nature, and the struggle that implies.

there's so many beautiful but tragic lines in this fairytale. it's also just fascinating to read in general due to the origins that people have theorized: many believe that andersen wrote this after being rejected by a man he had great romantic feelings for. finding the parallels of how andersen probably felt himself, neglected and loved but never loved completely or fully, projected onto the mermaid always has me incredibly engrossed.

i will admit i've read this a few times before, but decided to reread it again in my adulthood. the amount of contextualization and reading comprehension i have now is incredibly different from when i was a child. back then, i had been so transfixed on how the mermaid's legs felt like a thousand knives against her heels everytime she walked. but now as an adult, i feel so much more in regards to her desire for an immortal, human soul, and to be part of a greater world beyond herself.

Never really loved the story of little mermaid, as it's tragic and I'm kind of afraid of mermaids...But this one is the disney version, so at least it got a happy ending...

Disney's The Little Mermaid is a classic, and I hope my niece will enjoy this Christmas present. It is just a simple retelling of the plot of the movie, but it's still a nice read.

Another childhood favorite story which I read a billion times. Ariel is my most favorite Disney princess. I watched the movie and the TV series SO many times as a kid.

This book was very difficult to rate, as some stories deserved 5 stars (Five Peas from the Same Pod, The Little Mermaid, The Little Match Girl) while others deserved only 1-2 stars.

My opinion of Hans Christian Andersen also ranged from brilliant to cracked.

So...

But overall, I think that I would get this book for my kids/godchildren. We would just perhaps read our favorite stories and skip some of the other ones.
