I had read this in high school and forgotten everything about it. I didn't love it this time around. There are funny moments, but on the whole it was pretty unsatisfying to me.

In the best of all possible worlds, Candide and his friends are frequently shot and bayoneted but never die; they endure unspeakable horrors and still believe in the best world; at the end of it all, they cultivate a garden.

Everyone should endure this at least once.

Though the irony can be appreciated from a hidtorical perspective, I found this unfunny and hardly poignant beyond the same three heavy-handed lines of commentary. Quick read and I am glad I read it once, but I will not be reading it again.
