This is a book I've given up before but picked it up again as my book club decided to read this. Initially I've given up on it because of the intensity in the beginning of the book, the difficulty of listening to author's achievements and worst of all, a quote of someone swearing! It was shocking to say the least but let me say this...

The author is extremely honest, brutally if I may say so - with his own shortcomings and sins including what I mentioned above.
If you've read even a couple of books on habits, especially from a Christian perspective, you may not find a ton of new things here. Still, there are a few things that may help you or give you a different idea of doing things or so. It surely could have been said in fewer words so I'd suggest you actually reading the "contents" and decide if it is worth your time.
It's worth mentioning that I've read the book for the practicality of it and not the theology of it which may be lacking in some places.
Also, if you go on his website - he suggests you do, you may also see a summary of the book. I think that has it all.

Do I regret reading the book? Not really but I would not read again. What I'd do instead is going on The Common Rule website and have my mind refreshed on a habits.

I'd give it a 3.5 stars if there was no foul language in it.

It has an interesting point but it all just seems to unattainable and like it was written for a prototypical well-off white nuclear family. It felt like it wasn't for me and all of my family and all of our neurodivergency, disabilities, and complications. The writing doesn't capture my experience and takes a lot for granted. I also didn't like how it had lots of instruction for Christians and used a lot to explain things about God, but it didn't really quote scripture. All in all, I can see what it was going for, but it stressed me out to read it, so I DNF'd it.

What a beautifully written book! The content was excellent (and gave me a helpful framework to evaluate the practices of my life), but my favorite thing is reading a skillful writer who loves Jesus. It pours off of every page! A life directed at seeking beauty indeed. A challenging and lightening reading experience.

Super helpful, super easy to read, very practical. The common rule lays out 4 daily and 4 weekly habits to implement in daily living to give healthy rhythms in the midst of life’s busyness. If you’re not convinced when you read what the habits are (like I was with some), you will be more so after reading the chapters. Earley also does a great job at giving clear advice and guidance in what implementing the habits can look like instead of just saying you should figure out how to do this.

Reading this as a book club with some friends and it has been great for that. Fun to see how other people view and implement the habits and leads to meaningful convos especially with the questions included for discussion in the back of the book!!

A really good book from the author of Habits of the Household, which I loved even more. Although I did not agree with all of his thoughts (especially those on fasting) and I will probably not embrace his common rule (at least in the way he presents it in this book), I liked this and will recommend it to believers, especially those in the American church.
