Both an amazing story and a powerful message. Could not put it down and think it's something everyone would get value from reading.

***Sort of spoilers but not really***

***Nothing in depth about any particular events in the book just my thoughts on the reviews saying that the message and process detailed could be dangerous and what I took the main messages to be****

I can understand why some reviews mention finding Goggins' process a tad one dimensional and also potentially harmful because of how he repeatedly pushes himself beyond his limit and often whilst being unprepared. However, I didn't feel as though the book was necessarily encouraging people to follow him exactly.

There are definitely cautionary tales in there, as well as the inspirational ones.
I found the main point to be that we all have a reservoir of untapped potential and many people need to remove themselves from their comfort zones more often to find what they're capable of. Not necessarily by running 100 miles with no training. Sign up to a race and train for it and use proper nutrition, the point is you are still getting out of your comfort zone and training the mind and pushing yourself. The book isn't encouraging recklessness, his frequent injuries should be enough to discourage that. But is encouraging that you push harder and don't give up when you first feel like it. And showing the value of doing things even if you don't want to. It shows the barriers you can push through, the power of a strong mental state and never giving up.

Alongside him, there are the incredible ultra marathon athletes who train like mad before races and treat pace and nutrition as a science. Their physical and mental accomplishments are just as phenomenal and they too show what the human is capable of. This book is simply one man's story of how he discovered that along with some tips to get you going.

I started reading this during an extremely difficult period of my life, and it was helpful at the time. However, as I began to heal from that period, I fell off reading this and never felt the need to pick it up again. I may revisit it in the future, but for now it belongs to a past experience and era of my life.

David Goggins thinks very highly of himself and his accomplishments and this book is all about him telling you how awesome he is. The audiobook would have been much better had he read it himself instead of this podcast thing where the narrator reads and then interviews Goggins every 15 minutes. My biggest issue with this book is how sexist and misogynistic it is. He constantly uses the word pussy and vagina in a negative. I want to counter with the fact that the vagina/pussy is actually an amazing part that is strong, resilient, life-affirming necessary piece of human survival. The penis can’t change shape and push a human being out of it so maybe he should be using the words dick/penis to indicate weakness. I mean have you seen how sensitive and weak those things are? Definitely more apt to wimp out of everything. The best takeaway is that you can push yourself further than you think you can. However, he’s pretty stupid the way he does stuff and if someone was more intelligent and kind to the human body (as in don’t run a marathon off the couch) then one could still accomplish these things without the injuries or being an idiot.
