I’m torn on this, but I did like some of the writing, but also, there are elements that feel derivative (I kept reading thinking of Sloane Crosley’s 2022 novel) or very much stereotypical of novels with Girl in the title (perhaps with a wink in text?), idk

Nothing I love more than a deeply sad, self-sabotaging main character whose self destruction, paired with external forces makes for an intriguing read.

Thanks, Macmillian Audio, for the gifted audiobook!

I requested for two reasons: Laura Benanti was the narrator, and the MC was a theatre critic. I ended up DNFing before the 50% mark. Benanti's narration was the only reason I kept going, but I couldn't stick it out.

I had no connection to the MC. I didn't want to be friends with her. I didn't want to root for her. I didn't want her to fail. I just felt blah about her. Sometimes, I got annoyed, but that wasn't enough to stick around and hope it would change into something else.

The other bummer was I like noir books. I like cat and mouse books. I love NYC and theatre. I also love Laura Benanti, so hearing her perform is an extra perk. But I couldn't get into this. I was bummed.

It gets an extra star because the narration was excellent but plotwise and characterwise, it was a mess for me.

I enjoyed the protagonist's acerbic sense of humor and her interactions with her friends, as well as with the less likable characters. I had suspected part of the truth of what was going on, but not all of it. I enjoyed learning what was up, but the ultimate ending felt like a little bit of a letdown somehow.

Unusual read, and written with passion. I loved the twist, in fact, some of the things I didn't like about the book made total sense and felt clever once all was revealed (don't want to say because would be major spoilers). However, I think it would be better enjoyed by those with more familiarity with theater than I do.
