American Prometheus: The Triumph & Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer by Kai Bird, Martin J. Sherwin

It horrifies me to think that our history of handing power to petty tyrants is nowhere near the end. This book will give you nightmares.

A very in-depth biography of a fascinating, complex, and brilliant man. The government did him dirty. I was delighted to learn about Oppenheimer's interest in art, literature, and philosophy, and that he was a staunch advocate for the humanities when he was the director of the Institute for Advanced Study. From the man himself: "Science needs the humanities to better understand its own character and consequences."
