With the text to self connection, which is when a reader applies the happenings in a book to themselves and/or their life, young readers can apply the traditions of this Jewish family during times of mourning and burial with their own families traditions at a time of loss. In this story students learn of the Jewish tradition of unveiling the tombstone of a loved one on the one year anniversary of their death, as well as the tradition of placing stones beside their grave as a sign of respect and as a celebration for all the special memories they shared with that loved one. Students will either identify with the story and traditions, or they will have their own traditions to compare with those of this Jewish family. Either way, this story tells us "memories of someone you love never get lost." With this statement all children can apply this story to themselves as they go through life and unfortunately lose loved ones.
