a delightfully fucked up look at what might happen if a half dozen countries each created their own amoral superbeings (think dr manhattan from watchmen), who each try to remake the planet to their own unknowable standards, while the human race stands by helplessly and a) worships them and b) dies a lot. it ain't pretty, but it's a strangely good read for a book that has zero sympathetic characters. as one of the superbeings notes, "i'm not insane, i'm simply without sanity," and when you put a bunch of those folks together, pretty soon someone's blown a hole through the moon.
