this was so excellent.  i loved everything about it.  the family dynamics were so authentic, the lore and the story was so well-written... and the magic??? ugh this book did such a good job of not over-explaining.  this book felt so mysterious and that made the reveals so much more satisfying.  the story felt so fresh and like nothing ive ever read before... i love a contemporary fantasy that sneaks up on you in all the right ways.

I'm rounding up. I was very engaged with the story and it was easy to keep picking up because I wanted to learn more about the power and curse Orquidea gained as a young woman...but there were so many characters I had to go back and re-read sections because I was mixing up people. Is that really a dig on my own comprehension abilities?lol maybe? But the story ended and I still have questions! I feel with some fantasy reads it's easy to fill plot holes with "it's the power! it's magic!" or whatever. And this is an example of that. So, I did enjoy the writing, but I'm left a lil unsatisfied.

This is a book of family, divine women, and magic.

The imagery and storytelling in this book is masterful and gorgeous. The setting so lush and the characters leap off the page.

Orquídea Divina was a fascinating character. While her legacy included tragedy, it also held a wealth of family and a magic drawn from the depths of the soil and the heart of her culture.

It is a book that surprised me in its beauty and in the way in which it snuck up on me and made my heart ache. It is a book I will not forget.

*Audiobook narrated by Frankie Corzo. Frankie did a fantastic job! The only downfall of the audio is not being able to save quotes and highlight passages.

So many of these quotes will relate to people who were raised in a Latin American household. If you are into magical realism, this was a ton of fun, while also exploring family relations and multiple narrator perspectives! The second half really picked up and I finished the whole thing in like 5 hours!
