Heady, reflective, and nearly autobiographical, Mishima’s Confessions of a Mask is an expressionist painting. You won’t walk away with answers or resolutions to the main characters plight— instead this is a window into a queer young man’s attempt to reckon with society’s expectations and his desires in WWII-era Japan.

this took me a while to get through! not because i didn't enjoy reading it, but because it was just honest in a way that made me feel almost guilty for not giving it my undivided attention. mishima makes it hard to ever step away even when u've put the book down.
tucking my heart into the pages, alongside the one there now, until i'm ready to share in this ache again

the inability to embrace who you truly are. i find this problem so tragic. the main character lies to others in order to convince himself that he‘s "normal".
but the human brain cannot shut down human feelings.

beautifully written. the book has lots of fascinating thoughts and ideas. however, some of the scenes where mishima writes about main character‘s "fantasies" are too graphic. but maybe it makes the book more honest and realistic….?
i also would like to highlight the story of st. sebastian. wonderful reference.
