It was kind of all over the place, all the gay men were super good looking and fairly flat, the sex scenes lacked an emotional component which made them tedious (they also lacked proper preparation), the flow of the story was erratic and off-putting.

I am very forgiving when it comes to m/m romance novels because I don't need as much from them as I need from other genres to be entertained. I will read the next in the series to see if the author was just warming up, but I definitely only have so many chances to give.

This was the first book I’ve read by this author, and I found Merry Farmer’s style to be easy going and inline with what I’d expect from a historical romance. Alistair’s struggle with his place & duty to society as the first son is a trope I enjoy, one all the more complicated by his sexuality.

I found both Alistair and Joe to be very likable, and the anticipation and attraction between them was extremely satisfying. Unfortunately I didn’t really feel like the follow through on their relationship was as good as the build up; I was a little disappointed by the way their conflict played out and how easily or uneventfully it was resolved.

One thing I did really enjoy was the overall mystery plot Farmer weaves involving socialites trafficking children. I enjoyed the extended cast of characters involved in the investigation, and they will likely keep me reading the series to discover what happens next.

MM historical romance

While I love history, I don't usually expect romance to be historically accurate above the basics. This story, however, accurately depicts homosexuality in the 1800s, or as accurately as possible in romance. The story was engaging, the characters believable, and the secondary plot was very well written.

Entertaining. It took my 8 days to finish so that tells me it didn't keep me entirely interested. My first by this author and not quite sold but I've been told that the series gets better as it progresses so I'm planning on continuing down the road.
