Sophie Katz really knows how to piss people off, MYSELF INCLUDED!

i’ll admit, the story didn’t keep my interest until after i hit the 50% mark. before that, it was a lot of me trying to get on board with liking Sophie enough not to want her dead. i think part of the problem with me trying to maintain an interest in the book was that i was focused on the time difference from when the book was created to now. there were many times i found myself thinking, “why doesn’t she just send a text?” and then i remembered 😭

when i got to where i could actually feel the build-up of the plot—the emergence of potential suspects, the sleuthing, heightened paranoia, and the suspense of just wanting to know who did it and why—THAT was when i truly started to keep turning pages. by that point, it was more than just me wanting to finish the book because i started it, i actually needed to know how it ended.

after finishing this story i was reminded that it was the first book in a series. and i have to say, i think this is where i'll leave it. it was hard enough for me to stay engaged with the mc and the way she was characterized, as well as how fast-paced the story was, i genuinely don't think i have it in me to want to continue the series. the characters were a bit too over the top for me and it made it feel unrealistic. again, this could have everything to do with the difference in time of when it was written to now, but it was just hard for me to be in touch with them like i wanted to enough to like this story more than i did.

my inability to truly like this book boils down to my strong dislike for Sophie 💀 she just wasn't a likeable character. every chapter there was something she did or said that pissed me off and further solidified me not liking her, and i wanted to like her! i'm sure if i gave it another read i might feel differently, but that's not a promise i'm willing to make.
