Wanted to give it a 5 but didn’t get the e book and felt a little cheated about Stoic contemplations on death. Still would give this like a 4.5 due to thoroughness and ease of reading. Also gave me a lot more philosophers to read.

I like the connections made between Buddhism and CBT and thing that this is very relevant to today.

Edited-
Updated review to reflect having read the chapter on death. Super useful.

I read this book because I want to rationalize this recent event that happened to me that got me into relapse. This is therapeutical in a way that it taught me the most important thing to contemplate on everyday - what is beyond my comtrol should not bother me.

Today I will move on from the heartbreak that I caused myself.

Ambitious book that tries to combine modern CBT therapy with the ancient practice of stoicism. I'm a big stoicism fan, but have often found the main texts to be lacking on the "how do I get better at this aspect". Also much more true to the original texts than some of the other modern stuff out there (I've heard a fair amount of criticism for William Irvine, although I haven't reread the "Stoic Challenge" since 2020. Bonus points also for the idea of eternal recurrence borrowed from Nietzche. Very comforting idea: trying to fit into my catholic faith.

Why no five stars then? This book quotes a lot from Pierre Hadot's "Philosophy as a Way of Life". It seems like most people serious about stoicism would be better off reading that. I'm certainly planning on doing that next. Someday I will really have to learn French.

A great guide to the more detailed aspects of Stoicism, talking about not so frequently mentioned topics like Stoic Physics and the connection between Stoicism and modern psychology. The only drawback is that the author sometimes overloads you with lots of information, making it impossible to grasp everything.

Poorly written - filled with fluff, pseudo-academic and low effort grab at self help. Danced with the historical context, and was surface level in exploring concepts of the philosophy.

Er zijn een boel boeken over Stoicijnen en vele daarvan zijn uitstekend. Dit boek voeg daar niets aan toe en maakte op mij een heel rommelige indruk. Ik heb het niet uitgelezen.
