This was very nearly a new favorite of mine. This was all the nostalgic teen wolf feelings.

I felt instantly protective and connected to Ox, and in love with how TJ Klune wrote him and his journey from an abused and bullied boy to a confident man with a pack he'd do anything for. He's a precious character that I will love always.

Why am I rating this lower? Mostly, because of the repetitions, the pacing which was a mess past the 300 page mark and the writing which started so well but I think deteriorated toward the end of act 2. It felt like a lot of that section was padded and just went on for too long, for me. I do love the ending, but it was still a lot of conversations being repeated and parts that definitely could have been cut and nothing about the story or character development would have changed. Also, the choice to make the age gap six years and have one of them be eleven when they meet is something I will never like or understand. He could have been a year older or maybe two, why six??

(Side note: I am picky about sex scenes because if it's too detailed I can't take it seriously and I usually just laugh. The one really explicit scene in this book was WAY too detailed and IMO went on too long. It was like fifteen pages ffs)

Overall, I am excited for the rest of the series, despite my issues with the length and bloat of book 1.

I feel very conflicted about how I feel about this book.

Pros:
First time reading this author and the way he writes is amazing. The world the town the house and the characters felt so real. I’ve never read a wolf book where the pack dynamics and everything felt so real to me. I have a feeling I’ll be thinking about this book and the charecters for a long time.
The pack dynamics alone and how ox comes into his own was so interesting to read and the found family in this.

-the narrator for audiobook did a great job

Cons: I really liked Jo and ox romance but I HATED the age gap. They really should have made ox 12 so he’s slightly older. Having Jo 10 and ox 16 when they meet was gross. Sure ox doesn’t intentionally think of him that way till he’s older but that’s still grooming behavior. The whole can’t wait till you are 18 thing is so icky. It gave me twilight vibes when they imprint on someone and wait for the child to age yikes….. the author could’ve easily made them closer in age and it wouldn’t change much story wise.
At first I thought Carter and ox would get together even though they had no chemistry simply because they are the same age.

- I also hated the micro trope of “I know what’s best for you. To keep you safe I’m gonna leave.” Also very twilight.
I understand jo was 17 and teens make dumb decisions so it’s realistic I suppose but is annoying to read.

Not sure if I will continue the series since I felt little connection to Robbie and Gordo annoys me 🤣
I am going to try the authors other works because I really do love his style of writing.
